A landscape contractor implements the landscape design, including all plant materials and construction elements (grading, walls, water features, lighting, decks, and walkways). Since these projects range in scope from a few hundred to several million dollars, the type of equipment used and the type of company that performs the work varies tremendously.
Students interested in this exciting career path are encouraged to work for BYU Grounds on the irrigation, construction and paver crews (PWS 198R), in addition to completing paid internships with commercial or residential design/build contractors.
Landscape construction offers many opportunities for self-employment, typically following a few years of employment with another company. Participation in at least one Student Career Days and completion of the Certified Landscape Professional exam (CLP) prior to graduation is highly desired.
In addition to courses required by the major, courses in Spanish and the complete business minor are also recommended.
