Getting involved
If you are passionate about insects, evolution or applying genomic data to answer questions about biodiversity please reach out! Prior experience is not a prerequisite to joining the lab.
For Undergraduate Students
There are a couple of different ways you can get involved. I generally have students start off enrolling in mentored research (PWS 494R). The credits you enroll in translate into hours spent doing research-related activities each week. Each full credit translates into 3 hours of lab work a week. If you are interested in enrolling in PWS 494R, please contact me at sam_standring (at) byu.edu.
There are also opportunities for paid research. While most of the paid opportunities in the lab are given to students who participated in mentored research in the past, I encourage all of my students to apply for CURA grants. This allows you to develop your own research plan and receive your own research funding. Please reach out if you have interest in developing a CURA proposal together.
For Graduate Students
Please email me if you are interested in graduate school, I’m always happy to talk to prospective graduate students.
