Quinoa Iron Nutrition In Hydroponics

Objectives

Hydroponics is a method of controlled environment, soilless plant cultivation utilizing an aqueous medium formulated with essential macro, and micronutrients. The primary objective of this research is to systematically optimize this nutrient delivery system to maximize biomass, root, and grain yield, thereby maximizing yields for both applied agronomic and basic scientific initiatives.

Summary

Recent studies have established baseline plant performance under sub-optimal Fe treatments. Future research will expand this concentration gradient to delineate the exact boundary between nutrient deficiency and toxicity, ultimately defining the precise iron threshold required to maintain metabolic homeostasis.

Results

In our recent investigation evaluating four replicates (n = 4) across varying iron (Fe) concentrations (0.27 uM, 2.7 uM, and 27 uM) within a controlled-environment growth chamber, we observed a direct, positive correlation between Fe availability and overall plant development. The lowest concentration treatment (0.27 uM) resulted in pronounced limitations, yielding significantly lower shoot and root biomass, plant height, and qualitative visual ratings compared to the higher concentration groups. All measured phenotypic parameters increased monotonically with concentration. Because a optimal threshold was not resolved within this treatment range, subsequent investigations will utilize elevated Fe concentrations to characterize the upper limits of the crop's nutritional response.
