Hybrid Bermudagrass Drought Tolerance in a Cool-Season Climate

Hybrid bermudagrass has demonstrated exceptional drought tolerance in Utah's cool-season climate. This research compared hybrid bermudagrass to Kentucky bluegrass under severe, moderate, and well-watered conditions and found that hybrid bermudagrass maintained green color for several weeks longer during severe drought. These findings contributed to the successful removal of hybrid bermudagrass from Utah's noxious weed list and highlight its potential to significantly reduce irrigation demands, making it a promising water-efficient alternative for athletic fields and landscapes in semi-arid regions.
