BYU research team find rates of Alzheimer’s gene is four times higher in Pacific Islanders
A BYU led-study found 25% of their Pacific Islander sample had the APOE ε4 allele, which is known to increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease. For comparison, the frequency among African Americans is about 12% and among European Americans, 6%. The team presented their findings this week at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Amsterdam.
BYU study: Women’s involvement in U.N. peace negotiations essential for long-term security
Research has shown that the best predictor of a nation’s level of peace is how well its women are treated. Women also play an important role in directly brokering peace: when women are at the table, peace agreements are 35% more likely to last at least 15 years. Unfortunately, a landmark U.N. Security Council resolution on women, peace and security is somewhat toothless, according to a recent analysis led by BYU law researchers.
Life Sciences Poster Competition: Winter 2023
The Harold B. Lee Library played host for this year’s College of Life Sciences poster competition. Presenters, friends, family, and a panel of judges made the turnout so successful that it was hard to hear the student presenters over all the excited chatter. Brooklynn Jarvis Kelson remembers the moment Elder Jeffrey R. Holland greeted her as he was leaving the Marriott Center after speaking at a BYU devotional. Life Sciences Announces Scott Weber as the New Microbiology & Molecular Biology Chair
College of Life Sciences Dean Laura Bridgewater announces the appointment of Scott Weber as the new chair of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Biology, effective July 1, 2023. Weber currently serves as the associate director for the Simmons Center for Cancer Research.
