Column Cactus

Cereus peruvianus (syn. C. repandus)

Family: Cactaceae

Native Range: Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay

Native Habitat: Neotropical

Cultural Use/Significance: Also known as the Peruvian apple cactus due to its red, edible fruit. It did not originate in Peru. Each flower opens for one night. These plants are used for building materials, medicine, as well as soaps and shampoos.

Cultural Requirements

Temperature: Hardy to 20°F

Irrigation: Water every two weeks, when the soil is dry. Reduce to once a month in winter.

Fertilizer: Balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during growing months. These grow quite large, but growth can be kept down by fertilizing less frequently.

Substrate: Well-draining potting mix.

Light: Young plants need light shade. Older plants need bright, direct light, but may need to be moved to partial shade in summer to prevent sunburn.
