Butcher's Broom

Ruscus hypophyllum

Native to Central Europe and the E. Mediterranean. this is an evergreen shrub related to asparagus. The large "leaves" on this plant are actually modifications to the stem called "cladodes" that perform photosynthesis like normal leaves.

The name "butcher's broom" comes from the quite literal traditional use of its branches as a broom.
