(Cocos nucifera)

Arecaceae family
Coconut belongs to the palm family. It is native to the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions. Since the nuts float and can germinate after six months at sea, they obviously had an efficient dispersal mechanism for spreading to far-flung Pacific Ocean islands. Interestingly, wild coconuts on the Pacific coast of Central America were not eaten by the natives. Coconut palms are monoecious. The endosperm is liquid in green nuts and solid in brown ones. Both forms are consumed, with the nut oil being in high demand for its high unsaturated fatty acid content.
