(Brassica oleracea var. capitata)
Brassicaceae family.
Cabbage is a self-incompatible biennial diploid, grown as an annual of course because it is harvested for its leaves. It is a staple vegetable in cooler temperate regions of Europe, for example in Germany where it is the main ingredient in sauerkraut. It is native to Europe and is a domesticated variety of the common European wild cabbage, B. oleracea var. oleracea. Kale, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kohlrabi, and Brussels sprouts are all different botanical varieties of B. oleracea that are descended from wild cabbage. Cabbage is highly susceptible to disease, insect, and nematode damage. Chinese cabbage is a separate species, B. campestris.
