(Brassica oleracea var. italica)
Brassicaceae family
Broccoli is native to the Mediterranean and East Asia. The edible portion of the plant is the flowering head, which must be harvested by hand, even in commercial fields, before the flowers open. Broccoli is highly nutritious. It is actually a botanical variety of the same species as cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, collards or kale, and kohlrabi.
