2012 LEADERSHIP AWARD

Bruce L. Webb

Bruce L. Webb
Bruce L. Webb was awarded the Karl G. Maeser Professional Faculty Excellence Award. This award recognizes outstanding achievement in fulfilling professional faculty responsibilities and is made possible by the generosity of the Karl G. Maeser Scholarship Society.

Bruce L. Webb has evolved from research technician to senior scientist and director of the Soil and Plant Analytical Laboratory at BYU. He effectively oversees the analysis of thousands of soil samples each year, thus creating a very successful mentoring environment. Over half of Bruce's students have chosen to pursue advanced degrees, while many others have transitioned into various technical careers. He has been credited many times by students with providing "the most pivotal aspect of [their] educational experience at BYU," and in 2009 he was awarded the College Outstanding Mentor Award.

Bruce carries a heavy teaching load; in addition to department courses, he instructs a Biology 100 general education course each year.  He also actively participates in research activities. He has contributed to over 25 peer-reviewed publications, and dozens of non-peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.

Carolyn Hanson

Carolyn Hanson
Carolyn Hanson was awarded the Fred A. Schwendiman Performance Award. This award recognizes a staff employee for exemplary contributions to the University through consistent and superior service. Carolyn Hanson is a model staff employee with 16 years of service who dedicates herself to the success of the Plant and Wildlife Sciences Department.

Carolyn chose to come to the department because she wanted to work more closely with students, recognizing that they are the primary reason we are all here. She consistently exemplifies the mission of the University through the service she renders to students and faculty. Carolyn inspires all by going above and beyond the call of duty, regularly performing tasks outside of normal working hours. She has an excellent relationship with all members of her department and takes care of everything, from the smallest task to the largest problem. Carolyn embodies the spirit of BYU in that she is Christlike in her actions.
